Farewell LCCT, Hello KLIA2

The Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) officially closed down this morning, after eight years. All operations have now officially moved to the KL International Airport 2 (KLIA2), which was built to accommodate budget airlines. KLIA2 was built at a cost of RM4 billion.

AirAsia begin operations in the new KLIA2 terminal this morning with its first flight into the facility arriving from Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, at 3.50pm.

The LCCT terminal was built to handle passenger traffic of up to 15 million people per annum, but had reached 22 million people per year. The new KLIA2 can handle up to 45 million passengers a year. AirAsia is expected to contribute 80% of the traffic.

Instead of demolishing LCCT, the building will be turned into an air cargo terminal.
