Malaysia is set to become the first place in the world to commercially hatch large, edible lobsters. The first batch of spiny lobsters have just recently hatched in the new aquaculture park. It is a 15-year, RM3 billion project which eventually will employ some 20,000 people. It is expected to reach full production by 2029. The lobsters are then placed in sea cages in Semporna, off the east coast of Sabah where they will grow to full size. They grow faster in warm water, but it must be pristine to get the best end results.
The park will require the hiring of many highly qualified scientists and engineers, as well as skilled aquaculture technicians. The global lobster industry is estimated to be US$4 billion, and 75% of that market is in the Asia Pacific area so the long-term outlook for this facility is excellent. The facility is part-owned by the American company, Darden Restaurants, the world’s largest full-service restaurant chain, which operates some 2,000 restaurants around the world.
