Malaysian filmmaker Indrani Kopal’s documentary was the recipient of the Best Short Documentary award at the recent Harlem International Film Festival.
Held in the United States, the Harlem International Film Festival is a five-day event that takes place annually in Harlem, New York. The festival first took place in 2005.
Indrani’s short film, The Game Changer, is a movie on a prison rehabilitation programme involving modern dance.
According to The Star, Indrani Kopal was a computer lab technician for five years before becoming a TV producer and getting a degree in multimedia communications. She has also worked with a local online news portal where she produced short web documentaries and trained Malaysians in video journalism. In 2006, Indrani ventured to the United States under the prestigious International Emerging Filmmakers Fellowship.
The Game Changer was actually part of Indrani’s thesis submission for a Master’s in documentary studies and production. The short film received nominations from eight different film festivals, which is a record-breaking achievement for a filmmaking student.
Indrani plans on producing a sequel to The Game Changer entitled The Incarcerated Rhythm, which will be part of her final thesis. The sequel will focus on the lives of the dancers once they are release from prison.
