The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has recommended an increase in public transport charges nationwide.
According to The Star, the recommendation was based on a study conducted following requests from industry players.
SPAD’s chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Albar, said that the request has been forwarded to Malaysia’s Transport Ministry for consideration. According to Hamid, raising the fares of public transportation was reasonable seeing as the rise in operational costs has resulted in companies to suffer.
“We understand their plight and also agree that there is a need for an increase in fares, including for taxis ferrying passengers into Singapore.”
Hamid also requested for patience from these companies, especially the Johor Bahru-Singapore Taxi Association, as the increase in fares would also require the cooperation of the Singapore Government.
An earlier report stated that more than 200 taxi drivers who bring passengers into Singapore were expected to face losses because of the toll hike at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex and the Woodlands checkpoint.
According to The Star, even bus and taxi operator had appealed for a fare increase of between 30% and 40%, saying that it was more than justifiable as the last fare increase was in 2008.
