An increasing number of airlines are offering inflight internet connectivity. It has been slow coming, but it is methodically being rolled out across several airlines. However, users need to make sure they read the small print. Many airlines charge a relatively low access charge and then charge for the amount of data used.
A passenger on a recent Singapore Airlines recently complained about a US$1,200 charge for accessing the internet during his flight. The access charge is only US$28.99 for 30MB of data. The passenger claims he made 155 page views and the final charge came to a staggering US$1,171.46.
We have heard of people getting even larger bills from their mobile service providers for failing to turn off the data access on their mobile phones when they travel to other countries. It all goes to show that, while access to the internet is becoming very much a part of our daily life, we need to be sure we understand the charges, especially when travelling.
