According to Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas, Zoo Negara has managed to fulfill the requirements and the construction of a special exhibit for the pandas. Initially, the pandas were supposed to be placed in Taman Wetlands in Putrajaya.
“The giant panda exhibit will be built on a 1.6 acre site complete with air conditioning at a temperature below 24 degrees Celcius as well as the natural habitat of the pandas,” he said.
According to Bernama, the cost of constructing the exhibit was estimated at RM25 million, with RM15 million to be funded by the 1Malaysia Development Berhad, and the balance by the government.
The construction work will begin in June this year, and is expected to be fully ready by April 2014.
