It was yet another enjoyable Expat Wine Dinner at the neighbourhood eatery Cava, tucked into Bangkung Row in a residential area of Bangsar. Guests began arriving as the sun went down and were greeted with glasses of refreshing red or white sangria and an assortment of Spanish-themed canapés. Once everyone made their way in to Cava’s cosy and comfortable dining space, sangria was replaced by wine, the first a delightful Bodegas Naia k Naia Verdeho, a crisp white wine whose freshness and acidity proved a brilliant pairing for the starter, Cava’s chilled tomato soup. The tapas course came out next and impressed diners with both its presentation and splendid diversity of flavours. An artfully arranged trio of Spanish octopus with potato, grilled asparagus and baby corn with a fantastic Romesco sauce, and deep fried Olives Villeroy with a light, creamy pesto sauce set taste buds alight. The mains were presented next, alongside a medium-bodied Bodegas Mano a Mano Tempranillo, a lovely Spanish red. Rather than offering a choice, Cava treated diners to both mains options, a tender grilled sirloin steak with mushroom sauce and truffle oil mashed potatoes, as well as a marvellous squid ink seafood paella, dotted with succulent lobster meat and topped with a fresh, light mayonnaise sauce. The expats on hand were barely done raving about the paella (and cleaning the squid ink colour from their lips) when the stunning desserts were delivered. No decadently sweet finish here: Cava presented a masterfully plated cheese platter to each diner, comprising soft Gorgonzola cheese with water crackers, maple syrup, and candied hazelnuts and walnuts. This fittingly upscale dessert was paired with a Bodegas Santo Cristo Garnacha that complemented the piquant cheese wonderfully. A special finish to a most enjoyable meal.
